Country Names in Chinese

This page lists the names of all the countries in the world in Mandarin Chinese and Pinyin romanization. But first, here is some useful information about the way countries are named in Chinese.

As a general rule there are two ways of forming the name of foreign countries in Chinese.

1. The word “country” (国 guó) is added to a character whose pronunciation is similar to the name of the country concerned.

  • 美国 měiguó: America
  • 英国 yīng guó: England
  • 法国 fǎ guó: France
  • 德国 dé guó: Germany

2. A purely phonetic translation is used. Chinese characters are used to replace the sound of the country’s name.

  • 爱尔兰 ài ěr lán: Ireland
  • 意大利 yì dà lì: Italy
